NASA Shoots Lasers at the Moon to Create new medium of Communication

NASA has set a new record for communication in space, beaming information to and from a probe named LADEE that is currently flying around the moon 380,000 kilometers away.

Aboard LADEE is the Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD), which achieved super-fast download speeds of 622 megabits per second (Mbps) and an upload rate of 20 Mbps. In comparison, the internet at WIRED’s office in San Francisco gets download rates of 75 Mbps and uploads at 50 Mbps. NASA’s typical communications with the moon are about five times slower than what LLCD provided.
Until now, NASA has used radio waves to communicate with its spacecraft out in the solar system. As a probe gets farther away, you need more power to transmit a signal. Earth-based receiving dishes have to be bigger, too, so that NASA’s most-distant probe, Voyager 1, relies on a 70-meter antenna to be heard. LLCD relies on three ground-based terminals at telescopes in New Mexico, California, and Spain to communicate.
The agency is currently interested in creating better laser-based communication relays. With a concentrated beam of light, a spacecraft could send data at much faster rates that could carry higher resolution images and transmit 3-D videos from deep space. Of course, the method is challenging because it requires very high precision. If the skinny laser beam doesn’t exactly hit its target over a ridiculously far distance, it will lead to dropped calls and no communication. LLCD also has a slower transmission rate when the moon is on the horizon — and the signal has to travel through a greater amount of interfering atmosphere — than when it is directly overhead.
LLCD is actually a precursor to a larger and even more capable project, the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), which will further test the technology and is expected to launch in 2017. One day, such communication systems could be part of a fast interplanetary internet that will beam data around the solar system.

New Fuel would power a CAR for 100 years

Laser Power Systems, a U.S. company based out of  Connecticut is developing a method of automotive propulsion using the element thorium to produce electricity. The results far surpass anything currently powering automobiles.

To put it in perspective, 8 grams of Thorium produce enough power for a car to drive 1 million miles.

Thorium is similar in structure to the element uranium. Because it is an incredibly a dense material it has the potential to produce tremendous heat, and thus energy.

Charles Stevens, the CEO of Laser Power Systems CEO, explains that just one gram of thorium yields more energy than 28,000 liters of gasoline.

Just eight grams of thorium, Stevens explains, would produce more energy than the vehicle could use in its entire life, without the need for refueling… ever.

Stevens explained in an interview with Ward’s Auto, that small pieces of thorium have been used to generate heat, being positioned to create a thorium laser in the vehicle. The laser heats water which produces steam, which in turn powers a series of “mini-turbines.”

 

Seaworld and Aquatica:How to Travel

Seaworld Orlando is one of the famous and must visit tourist attraction in Orlando. It has two  parks Seaworld and Island of Aquatica which are side by side. If you are planning to visit there are numerous travel options that are possible to have from Airport. Let me tell you if you really want to enjoy each Shows, rides of the park you need to devote atleast 1 day each for Seaworld and Aquatica.
    1. Car rental: This could be best option available it will several hours that you might waste travelling from to and from the airport to Seaworld/Aquatica. This works best if you plan to visit other theme parks like Disney, Universal. Only problem is parking fees that you end up paying, but still it would be worth as you can spend the extra hours that you save inside the park.
   2. Taxi: Its good option saves you parking charges, but it might turn out expensive. You will get taxi from Airport. So its really convinient if you dont want to go for Car rental.

  3. Bus: Good economy option no need to worry about parking charges, but be ready to add 1 hour to your trip to and from Seaworld. Orlando is server by LYNX bus service which has good frequency. Living in Orlando without a car I have been using this option for all my travel to the theme parks and it works the best for me. Following are buses from Airport to Seaworld
                   1. Catch 111 from Airport and its last stop is SEAWORLD
                   2. If you want to go to Aquatica, just get down at SEAWORLD and they have free buses that move between SEAWORLD and Aquatica.
You can get a ticket for $2 in bus (keep the exact change, drivers won't give you change) for a trip to SEAWORLD ask for Transfer which works for 90 mins.Other Option is to take a day pass in the bus for $4.5 (keep the exact change, drivers won't give you change) and you can use it for the whole day to travel all over orlando. Both parks are awesome, make sure you give enough time atleast(1 days each park) 2-3 days for SEAWORD and Aquatica to have a real fun vaccatioin. I have a annual pass and we enjoy the park at our leisure we took 5 days to cover all two parks. Some times wait for major attractions can be more than 90 to 120 mins.
            

Universal Studios Orlando: How to travel from Airport to Universal Orlando

Universal Studios Orlando is one of the famous and must visit tourist attraction in Orlando. It has two theme parks Universal Resorts and Island of Adventures which are side by side. If you are planning to visit there are numerous travel options that are possible to have from Airport. Let me tell you if you really want to enjoy each ride of the park you need to devote atleast 1 day each for Universal studios and Island of Adventures.
    1. Car rental: This could be best option available it will several hours that you might waste travelling from to and from the airport to Unviersal. Hyperloop transportation system

During a conference call on Monday, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk dished out the details of his "fifth mode" of transportation -- a lofty and innovative system that's unlike anything ever built.

Laying out his vision and answering questions on the futuristic-sounding plan, Musk sounded confident his big idea could get done.

The proposed cost for the Hyperloop transportation system, which wants to get you between San Francisco and Los Angeles in just 35 minutes, Musk says, is about $6 billion.

That sounds very cheap and fast compared with the current California high-speed rail plan, which is aiming for a 3-hour travel time for the same trip, with a current budget of $68 billion.
